If you would really like to try self diagnosing, I would suggest you rig up a pressure tester using a cheap garden sprayer, old expansion tank cap and a fitting/nipple for the tank cap. That way you can pump up your expansion tank (to about 10 psi) and look around for your coolant leak.

In addition, if you suspect a head gasket leak, exhaust gases will show up in the coolant and there is a tester for that as well. My local Advance auto has a loaner and you only need to purchase the blue testing fluid.

For your garden sprayer rig, and the tester fluid, we're talking less than $ 25.
