Well, it could be a loose ground, but the normal way a motor will abruptly fail would also leave you with no spark when you attempted to power it up. That is because a brush is not making contact with the commutator to complete the circuit. So, the motor isn't "shorted" it is open circuited.
You could use the same stick you tried on the starter. Maybe it would start up again. Of course the trick is getting near enough to the motor to jar it -- a lot easier with the starter.
