Overdrive questions

I've been reading everything can find here on ODs, but am still confused on a couple of points.

- Can I unbolt the D OD from my existing transmission, and replace it with a J, or would this require changing the tranny too?

- There seem to be several versions of the remote (rear) shifter for the M41. Do these all interchange or do different versions of the M41 require different remotes shifters?
