Someone claiming to be Scott wrote he shifts from 1st at 3,500rpm. I submit - getting any performance out of a 240 (especially a B21F, M46 245 like I have) requires actually using the performance built in. The red block motors love revs. They shrug it off and ask for more. My 245 regularly sees 6-6.5 in 1st and 2nd to keep it healthy and happy (295k--motor never been apart). It's not a particularly economical way to drive - but a couple of times a day when needed will do no harm. I use that 3.5-4 range to accelerate smoothly for normal driving and have no problem staying ahead of the pack at lights. Most drivers don't use the throttle much anyway. You can't argue with the numbers-- a 0 to 60 time of 13-15 seconds is not going to beat many modern cars but in the real world here on Long Island and when I'm visiting in Winston-Salem keeping up is not a concern as long as I make the motor work for a living. -- Dave
