Tapping the starter 700 1991

Last week the starter would not start the car , not even a clicking sound . I took a broom stick and tapped on the starter body and it worked. It even turns over a bit more briskly. Just today though it would not work again . I tapped on the starter body again , not even a hard whack and starting to work again . So what is going bad?
