odometer works, speedometer doesn't 200 1989

Got a visit from my sister, after dark, informing me that the speedometer of her '89-245 wasn't working but the odometer was. This is after I replaced the alternator with a 100 amp one a couple of days ago because the battery was flat. (80A, brushes very short, idiot lights not on even with better brushes). I did notice the speedometer needle spiking when I tried starting the car with better brushes installed in the 80A alternator.

What should I check for before assuming it is the capacitors?
