How does the open area of your design compare to the open area of the grill ? Since the path has more turns it will restrict the airflow even if the open area is the same.

People have tried keeping the water and leaves out with a hood or scoop that fits over the outside grillwork. One version used a deflector for a heating duct. I don't know how they worked out or if the opening faced forward or towards the windshield.
