FWIW --- just for grins, I swung the smaller/upper u-joint 180 degrees from the way the OEM lower joint slides on the pinion shaft and, bam, it went right on. Won't go on the other way -- for the life of me it makes no sense. But it matters not -- it will work fine. The clamping bolt merely goes in from the bottom instead of the top. And it ended up looking like this (tacked)....
