It helps to research what has been done before in the topic or topics you want to write in or to, and not repeat prior efforts. Though I can imagine not many have if at all.

Getting an agent, if one picks you up and promotes you, that also offers an editor (hopes a good editor), and finding a publisher who will purchase publishing rights, and figure presales on the internets and in print at the Barnes and Noble may be useful.
