hi ron- read your reply and agree with some of the things you say. have only had a 240 which has the cable clutch, but told some other models of volvos used a hydraulic actuated clutch. never saw one. but have seen them in saturns. agree saturns are not too common anymore. most have seen the squasher. bought mine new in 01 with a 5 speed stick. original internal slave cylinder leaked at 50k miles cost 1500 to replace. this cylinder is called internal because it is inside the transaxle case when actuated through a hydraulic hose from the clutch master cylinder on the firewall. there is a throwout bearing on the end of the slave cylinder which pushes against the fingers of the pressure plate. a longer lived and easier to replace method would have been to use a slave cylinder with a push plunger mounted externally on the transaxle housing(or a volvo type cable) actuating a regular clutch fork. this cylinder is connected to the clutch master cylinder. hondas and toyotas use this system which i think is clearly preferable. had to replace the saturn slave cylinder a 2d time when it leaked hydraulic fluid after about another 50k miles. same mechanic did both jobs and told me the heat, hydraulic pressure and vibration shorten the life of the slave cylinder. raised hell with gm when this happened a 2d time and they refunded me the cost of the part, not the labor. i stick by these two statements.apologies if i didnt make myself as clear as i could have. when the slave starts leaking when you step on the clutch to shift it leaks a lot faster and has to be filled more frequently. more than a drop believe me. btw do carry an extra clutch cable in the 240 which can be replaced if need be on the side of tobacco road or a dark desert highway. btw never exaggerate when drinking coffee, but have been known to when drinking t bird but well keep that our secret. thanks tons oldduke
