Running hot 1800

My '73 1800ES runs hot while driving at highway speeds (3500+ RPM) for prolonged periods in hot weather--especially when going uphill. The water temp needle hovers at the 3/4 mark, yet still below the red. Around town, no issues.

--I just purged the radiator and installed a 70 Celsius thermostat.
--The water pump is solid
--Hoses are good
--Original radiator
--Fan is in working order
--Timing and plugs are where they need to be

Questions:

--My car has AC. I have heard that the AC unit (whether it is on or not) disrupts air flow to the engine, making it run hot. Is this true?

--Is an aluminum radiator a better option? Has anyone had luck with a particular brand?

--Do 1800ES models just run hot? What measures have others taken to address the heat?
