I had a pilot bearing freeze up one time. I remember saying "How weird, the clutch pedal feels perfectly fine but it won't disengage". The mechanic that fixed it said it was a bear to extract the trans shaft out of the pilot bearing. I guess when the bearing froze the shaft spun in the inner race until it got too hot and also froze. So you're right, I should have said "must change".
