1990 240 A/C compressor R&R - what is this thingy?

Amarin, it sounds like I would want both components in the circuit then. Is that right? Or did the later compressors have something else to deal with the voltage spikes?
I already crimped in just the wire to hook up the clutch circuit. I could conceivably cut the pigtail a little shorter and put in a new butt-splice including the diode this time.
