head lights problems 200

Hi,

Boy, that does not sound good that you are seeing junkyard vultures in and around there or in the future! Don't give up ... as it's still daytime drivable.

The headlight relay that you are looking for is just to the right of the instrument cluster and clipped on a rail just under the center vents.
Some people remove the vents trim and yank them loose. I forget if they are stapled? Or you can pull the instrument cluster. I think it's easier to pop the cluster.
Just be careful with disconnecting and plugging back on the wires. There is an extra one, usually not connected, in there JUST laying around!
Sometimes that extra spade wire burns out your speedometer. I think it's white with a red stripe or yellow with a red stripe. Take a picture before disconnecting things!
Don't put anything back on that you are not sure for knowing where it goes.
You will have lots more room to sniff any issue back in there!

The relay is a metal can about one inch square. There are several but I think it's the first one going in!
The relay has a white socket that it plugs into. In many cases the terminals within the socket overheat. The heat takes its toll on the wires ends from what I have seen.
I believe there is a post with picture (somewhere) from Art Benstein showing a burnt one.
I have not seen this on my cars as I check them whenever in in there for other work. Like a voltmeter or tachometer.
All but one of my cars look the same dash wise. You almost have to think to look for the color of the hood or upholstery.

I did a search of sorts and found this write up but its for older 240's prior to the nineties.
It says the relay is under the drivers toe panel but that was later moved to above the console.

The bulb out sensing relay, mention in the post above, that I posted a picture link to, is in your other thread or post.
That relay is under the whole dash behind the knee bolster but may be hung back up next to the steering wheel column. It looks like the picture in the link.
If you headlight relay socket and wiring looks good you might have to do some under the dash diving!

Since your voltage is so low I'm thinking something has gotten hot and burnt "open" a circuit.
Have you checked the connectors on the dipper relay out under the hood.
It's mounted on the left fender. Except for the 1993, their special! (:-) it's on the other side! Crazy?

Shorts only last for a "short" while! Then it's becomes an open circuit like an off switch or a burnt out fuse or light bulb in some cases. Again "opens" stay that way!
Your wire must be hanging on by a strand inside the wire!

Hope this help you find the cause as we need you car to stay on the road. Run over them vultures!

Phil
