I agree, it would act as a pre-filter...but along with any filter would come the possibility for it to be clogged by debris, so just make sure the cross-sectional area of crenelations is at the very least equal to inner cross-section of tube...and thinking about it even more, would it be possible to route it to somewhere under Sender Hole (but NOT fouling Sender!), so that inspection and possible cleaning were options?
