And I would have to add my two cents to this interesting thread to wonder aloud why anyone would anticipate treating an antique (assume steel fuel tank) with such poor respect as to want to use the very last gallon of sludge left in the tank. Keep it full if not on a cross-country trip, and if on such a trip, stop to buy fuel before you get to the last gallon. No modifications to the original concept needed.
