If you're talking about the crankshaft gear the timing belt rides on, it's supposed to be a slip fit and if it's not coming off easily then there is probably some corrosion built up on the inside.
If so, use some penetrating oil. If that doesn't work, try some heat to loosen the corrosion. You might also try tapping lightly on the outside edge,not on the teeth, but avoid hitting the nub that aligns the crankshaft pulley as those are known for breaking.
I have never had to use a gear puller puller to remove the timing belt gear.
