Adding to Abe's thoughts 200 84

As always, Abe probably has you on the right track. If a loose connection isn't apparent then don't overlook the probability that you've bumped into the dreaded engine wiring harness rot problem. Even when changing a battery, it wouldn't take much to disturb the harness enough to have a bit of brittle insulation fall away and permit a short.

And as Abe has always taught us, as a preventative measure be sure to check that the pre-heat hose flap inside the air filter box closes when the engine is warm. Failure of the little thermostat that closes this flap is probably one of the leading causes of fried AMM's.

If you poke around this site in the 740 FAQ and archives you'll find lots on both topics.
