Happy holidays everyone!
I drove to my parent's house for xmas; it's about 100
miles, though I'm not sure exactly how far I drove because
the speedo on my car broke a couple days agoΏ].
Anyhow, I get there and the coolant reserve tank is more
than half empty where it was slightly more than full prior
to my leaving. The oil seems clean, so I don't think it
is in the oil. The only time I've ever lost coolant before
was when I was going down some mountain roads and using the
motor to brake quite a lot (it would smoke a little like that
then smoke lots if I alternated between flooring it and not).
I usually drive around 70mph (B18 + M40) this time I
probably drove around 58mph. Could this account for why I
used coolant and not oil this trip instead of my usual quart
of oil per 100miles driven?
So, should I invest in a new head gasket? I did a
compression test a while ago and it was pretty dead even;
I've not done one recently, though.
Ώ] (I fixed it by removing the worm gear / speedo drive,
soaking it in penatrating oil, and then hosing it down with
silicon lube and some oil that says that it's got teflon in it)
Thanks
chris
