I recently broke a glass headlight lens due to a rock on my FWD Volvo. I ordered the replacement from one of the Volvo parts discounters, and as I recall the cost was still north of $200. Per DOT regs you can't buy just the lens, the entire headlight has to be replaced.
Plus the beam pattern is pretty funky to begin with. Not nearly as good as the old style Cibie Z-beams or Hellas in my opinion.
Are you complaining because the plastic lenses become opaque? I believe the european 200-700-900 series have glass lenses. I also think there was a thread on "upgrading" to euro lights on Brickboard at one time. There are about a bazillion little pieces to change, but apparently it can be done. Check the archives.
Glass breaks, plastic deteriorates. You can't win.
Discontinuing the standard size headlights is one of the dumbest automotive ideas of the last 20 years.
