An impact wrench is not recommended for removing or installing the center crank bolt on the B230 engine. In contrast to the B21/23 engine (which had a forged steel crank), the B230 has a cast crank. Cast is more brittle and might snap from the impacts.

While it's very unlikely that this would happen, why else would Volvo design and sell a tool for locking the front pulley? Someone here on the BB saw a 240 in the shop to have the crank replaced --- because they tried to remove the front crank bolt with an impact wrench. More than the bolt was removed, and permanently.

One Brickster found that a certain prybar from Sears fits perfectly into the slot in the front pulley, and will lock it (by jamming against the floor) for loosening and tightening the bolt.
