I agree w/Chris. Either the radio relay or the RPM sensor (crank position sensor). The wire which runs from the sensor on the bell housing to a disconnect is often attached to the back of the cylinder head which eventually wears through the insulation from heat and vibration. You have the classic resulting symptoms. $65.00 to fix. I suffered similar frustration for 2 years and was ripped off by a Volvo dealership which replaced everything but the RPM sensor which cost me over $1300. I fixed it finally myself for $65.00.
