I read this after seeing the subject heading and becoming very concerned for your, umm, health. The possibility too that Mrs. Bain may have broken it for you...

But you were using a 12 point, chromed socket to turn HEAD BOLTS?! You deserve a broken tool and some skinned knuckles too.... and a smack on the head.

Also, the impact ones may not work as the wall thickness is too much on some heads, in other words... you'll never get your tool deep enough in the hole to finish the job. ok?

Go get a shorty, 6 point, with 1/2" or better drive and just short enough of an extension to clear.

Tool away old boy!
