Chris, Is your car an auto or manual? With you been in the UK. I would guest it a manual I would take a look at the wiring to the gearbox they may have left the wiring for an auto transmission and the wire for the Park and neutral start switch is been activated and disabling the starter. If you don’t want to open the hood (Bonnet) to start the car install a press button switch in side. Good luck
