I had to clean my block not long ago to find a leak. I used a off the shelf cleaner called "gunk" i think in a yellow can. You spray it on the engine (try and avoid or remove soft rubber/plastice parts) let it do its thing and hose it off. It seemed to work well. I have heard that u can get it profess. steam cleaned also.
