Re: Replace steering rack: straightforward? 200 1986

No special tools required. You probably will want to get new crush rings (seals) for the two PS fluid hoses that connect to the rack. The best advice is to jack the front end up high enough to give yourself space to work under it and get jack stands under it. The most frustating part of the whole thing that I remember is that the steering shaft u-joint only fits onto the spline on the rack in ONE way. The rack shaft will have one or two "teeth" missing from the spline and the u-joint will have the same. These two have to fit up perfectly, flat spot to flat spot. You will have to fit this u-joint and shaft together before you can bolt up the rack, so you're having to do this alignment while supporting the full weight of the rack, so give yourself room to work under the car. If you're unsure of mileage or have over 100k miles, I'd second the recommendation to replace tie rod ends and ball joints, since you'll need an alignment anyway. Make sure you follow the directions that come with the replacement rack for flushing and priming properly. Good luck!
