lambda sond 200 78

I have a question regarding the lamda sond in my '78 264 GL. The guy I bought the car from informed me (actually, I think the right word might be misinformed) that it was intended to shut the car down in the event that too much crud was being released into the air through the exhaust system. He removed the sond and put it in the little spare parts compartment in the trunk. I was wondering if I should reinstall it or leave it alone. Any advice on this would be great, thanks in advance!
