The VX3 cam is probably the best choice in a Volvo OEM cam. The K and H grinds offer more top end and less bottom end. The A is probably a compromise. I am not sure what you had originally or how it compares to an A. The A is not a very radical cam.
Most people end up buying the adjustable cam gear in order to move some of the top end power from the VX3 back dwn to the bottom end. Since the VX3 is really a VX advanced 3 degrees, using a cam gear to advance it further means you will probably end up running the cam more than half a tooth off. This seems pretty silly to me.
I think people should consider a more modern cam design (the Volvo designs are over 20 years old in most cases and the newer ones are jsut a combination of the older designs) such as the Phase One from Unitek. It probably ends up costing as much by the time it is shipped from Sweden as a VX3 and cam gear, but at least you have a cam that works well without any bandaids. There should be a link to Unitek from the Turbobricks website.
I would think that a VX3 without a cam gear would be particularly dull on an automatic car. Automatics like low end torque and are harder to manipulate to keep rpm up in the power curve.
