simple, quick question.....what is this button? 700 1989

hi

on my 1989 760ti wagon with electronic climate control, there is a little button with a picture of a "snow flake", which i am assuming is to engage the a/c compressor clutch. however, this button is flashing, and all the air coming out with/without the button on, isn't cold! it's kind of getting hot where i am. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
