There is a chance the lock mechanism can be adjusted and restore locking on the trunk. I did on my '88 760T when it had the exact same problem. I moved it ~1 or 2 mm toward the lock cylinder. It was a PITA, two years ago, and I do not recall the details other than access was a problem.

Anyway, give it look, see what happens. Maybe you'll get lucky like I did.
