Re: How do I replace my clutch cable ? 200 1981

Ken -- it really isn't hard to do.

1) Get your car up on ramps or safely supported on jack stands and crawl under.

2) Remove the big spring which connects the throw-out arm to the trans support bracket.

3) Twist the adjustment 'nut' at the bellhousing's fat hollow cylinder thingie through which the cable passes on its way back to the throw-out arm -- you'll recognize it when you take a look. The idea is to get some slack. On my '81, the adjustment was done by screwing the cylindrical block at the end of the cable sheath right up the cable sheath itself.

4) Pull back (towards the rear) on the ball end of the cable. Slip the slotted disc off and then push/pull the ball end through the rubber block. Again, you'll recognize these parts when you get underneath. If the rubber block resists your attempts, a shot of spray lubricant will help. Once these pieces are off and disconnected, then pull the cable sheath through the bellhousing cylinder.

5) Now go up under the dashboard and remove the dust cover. Get a flashlight and get down low so you can see up to the upper end of the clutch pedal.

6) With needle nose pliers, remove the cotter pin which passes through a hole in the cylinder which in turn passes through the hole in the clutch pedal and the yoke at the other end of the clutch cable.

7) Remove the cylinder, and the yoke should come free of the pedal. *Don't lose* the pin or cylinder.

8) Open the hood and pull back on the clutch cable sheath -- that is, pull it away from the firewall. You're done. Installation is the reverse of removal.

9) When you've got the new one on, adjustment at the throw-out arm end requires, I think, 1-3mm of free play.

Rob
