Help diagnosing speedo/odometer problem 700 1989

The speedometer in the '89 740 GL I recently bought bounces around and the odometer isn't accurate. Is there a way to tell exactly what the problem is? I figured it was either or both the sender or reciever unit. I would like to figure out which it is first before I try to track one down.
