transmission change 140-160 71

My son has a '71 142 with an automatic transmission. He wants to change to a manual, but has been told it's a painful project involving "cutting all kinds of stuff". My impression is that the change should be pretty straightforward. Is there a problem I don't see? Also, is the manual transmission the same as the one for a 122?
