I think Tom's idea about the diaphram fingers is right on. I experienced a similiar problem with the hydraulic clutch of a Triumph Spitfire (very similiar design to your Volvo's). When I replaced the pressure plate, the problem went away permanently. I suspect this job is much easier on your 1800 then it was on the Spitfire (Step one: put the top down...). Good luck!
