Wow! Let me dig back through the cranial cobwebs.....
- '71 142S 4-spd, ~110k miles, or so.... no problems.....
- '72 142EA AT, about 140k miles, no problems 'cept a chafed-through cooling pipe.
- '72 142S A/T, 160k miles, no prob.
- '73 P1800ES 4-spd/OD, about 140k miles, no prob.
- '73 145 A/T, 160k miles, no prob...
- '74 145 A/T, 175k miles, chafed cooling pipe.
- '75 245 4-spd/OD, about 435k miles, clutch at about 180k and again around 350k miles, or so...
- '75 244 A/T, about 150k miles, tranny failed at around 200k (replaced 'n dumped)...
- '81 245 A/T, about 165k miles, no prob.
- '82 245 4-spd/OD, about 350k miles, clutch around 190k (rear main failed)...
- '82 245T 4-spd/OD, 130k miles, no prob...
- '83 244 GL A/T, 290k miles, chafed cooling pipe, rear seal, side seal...
- '86 245 GL A/T, 225k miles, kick down cable, rear seal....
- '91 740 A/T, ~220k miles, shifts hard...
I've only had one tranny out-and-out fail, on the '75 244 (BW35). That tranny was sluggish (into reverse) from the moment I bought it, yet wife drove it for 4-5 years without incident 'til it quit. Then I tossed in a used tranny and sold the car.
Had several small problems with OD on the '75 245, mostly related to a gummed-up solenoid -- but nothing serious.
