The last year for the 240 was '93 (the last 240 turbo was '85), and the last year for the 740 was '92. The newer, the better, and a non-turbo will cost less to maintain, but reliability isn't much different between the two. As you may know, the 240 and 740 shared the same 4-cyl, 8-valve engine from '85-on, so the two cars are very similar. A late 80's/early 90's 740 will often be less expensive than a comparable 240 because the 240 is generally more popular. The price range is around $3000-$6000 for a nice late 240 or 740 non-turbo, but there are many factors that impact the price (auto or manual trans, wagon or sedan, mileage, condition, amount of work needed, etc). When you find a car you like, have it checked out by a Volvo mechanic so you'll know what to expect, and then ask specific questions here.
