Re: Stalling 700 89

Dan,

I don't know what is causing your re-start problem, but I may be able to help with the cold stalling. Volvo TSB 23 708 is titled "Cold Start Condition". With ambient temperatures from 41-86 deg. F the engine may stall immediately after starting when subjected to load. (i.e. putting it in drive.) There is a $180.00 modification kit to correct this - p/n 3531106-7. Or you could put in an ECU(LH MFI control module) which incorporates the fix.

The Bosch p/n of the affected ECUs on Turbos are 0 280 000 541 and 0 280 000 518. Normally aspirated are 0 280 000 544 and 0 280 000 511. All the above part numbers require the modification kit to correct the cold stalling problem. ECUs which incorporate the fix are, turbo - 0 280 000 591 and normally aspirated - 0 280 000 554.

This could affect any turbo from '85 to '89 or n.a. engines from '85 to '87.

It doesn't cost anything to check the part number on your ECU. It is located below the glove box under the trim panel forward of the passenger side door.

I fixed my n.a. '87 with an ECU I found on ebay for less than $50.00

Good luck,
