I've had the exact same problem on my 88 240 wagon, but it's an M47 manual transmission. When that A/C is on, the condenser throws a lot of heat into the radiator. When the car is idling, there is not enough air flow over the radiator and condenser fins to cool them off. I'm guessing that the A/C doesen't cool too well when the car is not moving either. There have been a few posts regarding this lately.

One solution which will help quite a bit is to install an electric cooling fan in front of the condenser. Volvo makes these and installed them on certain models of 240 over the years. Also I think the newer 240's have them if they have the R-134 A/C system. You could also install an aftermarket fan, but them you have to wire it all yourself etc. Also the quality of the Volvo fan is much better than any aftermarket fans I've seen. I just bought the Volvo fan kit from someone on this board. It's a very sturdy unit with all the harnesses and relays to install it. I could find the part number for it if you like....
