five grand should get you a decent early 90s wagon with few problems.

The early 90s cars were really excellent... peaking at 93-95 940s (my opinion).

You are shopping in the right years, although that's not to say that the older cars aren't good either--they are. There are just some improvements made around/after 1990 that get you some more nice features.
