I believe you mean the nut holding the strut into the tube. Have used pipe wrenches also, but sometimes have resorted to a hammer and blunt chisel. You can sort of get into one of the nut notches and drive it loose. Wear some gloves as it is easier on the hands if you miss with the hammer.
