I might be wrong about the gears on the mainshaft running on needle rollers. They could be plain bushes. Haven't got access to the manuals at the moment so I might have confused the M46 with the M400/401 from the 164. (They say that forgetfullness is the first sign of..er..um....I've forgotten.)
If you end up pulling the box apart you'll soon find out anyway!
It is possible to replace the input shaft bearings without fully dis-assembling the box. Take off the front and rear cover plates, jiggle the layshaft bearing races out and the shaft will drop down far enough to ease the input shaft out.
I think I'd be checking layshaft end float first before committing to a full box overhaul. But I'm a lazy sod.
