They want to be part of the crowd, look mature... like that BMW 535i down the street that smokes. :)

What color is the smoke? White 'smoke' could just be condensation if it's especially humid or cool in the morning when you start up. Black smoke could indicate that you're running rich at idle - maybe the cold start function is overdoing it, or maybe the throttle switch is incorrectly adjusted?
