Sounds like you're on the right track. The car has two fuel pumps. One under the car (main) and one in the tank (feeder). If the main pump has been noisey for awhile most likely the feeder pump has gone bad. That makes the main pump work harder and burns itself out. Check to make sure the feeder pump is working.
