Had a similar problem w/ my '72 144E a few years back.

Assuming the car is still injected, it could be a coolant temp. or air temp. sender gone bad.

Coolant temp. sender is below the thermostat housing on a B20 and I would assume a B30 is similar. This is the temp. sender for the injection computer not the temp. gauge!

The air temp. sender is similar and is located to the right of the radiator below the air intake hose. Kind of tough to get to because there is a nut holding it on the front side of the sheet metal.

Replacing these two senders did it for me.
