The info was from the Bentley 240 manual for the B230 engine. I'm not familiar with any differences between that and your 740. You may be thinking of the Chrysler ignition which is in many 240's, I don't know about the 740s. Have you searched the archives and also the 700-900 site?

I would expect that any knock sensor should respond to tapping next to it by retarding the spark timing briefly.
