I can't REMEMBER all the times that I've sidelined one of my cars because the indications pointed to an expensive, difficult repair, only to discover much later that the solution was something simple and cheap.

Then, when I find and fix the problem, I get an inflated sense of accomplishment, as though I'd performed a miracle of diagnostics.

This self-deception is usually good for a retelling or two, though.
