Of course, the carbs have to be adjusted proberly and in good condition...and good compression sure helps...but...
Try the ignition timing. just turn the distributor a few degrees clockwise and see if that helps. It will make the car knock and ping worse...but seems to help cold starting a lot sometimes.
I used to have a 122 that simply wouldn't start cold...unless I turned that distributor. Then I'd have to turn it back in the summer to avoid the knock & ping. I know that doesn't sound like the right thing to do, but hey...if it works....
And of course, a block heater would help too...even one of the ones that goes in a radiator hose. How cold are you talking anyhow?
