Suggest you spray some WD40 into a cup and let it dry and examine
the residue. It leaves a gummy grease which gets very stiff and
tacky when cold. I would not use it in cables, locks or any light
mechanism because of that. (Certainly NOT on electric motors,
e.g.heater fans,etc!) It is fairly good at penetrating but the
gunk it leaves behind is about as good an adhesive as a lube.
Not good enough to stick anything you want to depend on, though.
