Sure that COULD theoretically make a difference, but I haven't seen it be that profound.

What year is your car? THAT could make a difference especially if the DISTRIBUTOR timing is screwed, not just the valve timing.

You have to either reset the timing belt altogether, or figure out which one is causing the problem.
