Which of these versions of an open Diff is correct?

I can't believe a Volvo Service Rep would make such a stupid statement.

Your Internet explanation is satisfactory. The drive shaft turns the pinion gear which in turn drives the ring gear. The ring gear always turns, the axles are free to rotate with respect to each other by the action of the differential gears.
